A Durham domestic murder-suicide leaves three children without their mother as police work to determine what led to the deadly shooting inside a Crest Street apartment.
DURHAM, NC — A devastating double shooting has shaken a Durham apartment complex, leaving three young girls without their mother and investigators pointing to what they believe was a deadly domestic situation gone wrong.
Early Wednesday morning, officers with the Durham Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment near Crest Street. Inside the unit, police found Shakeva Dixon, 27, and Maurice Langston, 36, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

Authorities say Dixon and Langston were formerly in a relationship and shared two children together. Though no longer a couple, family members say Dixon had been actively trying to separate herself from Langston and start over.
According to relatives, Dixon had recently moved into the apartment in an effort to create a stable, peaceful home for her children. She was described as a hands-on mother who was focused on protecting her girls and building a better future.
Dixon was also the mother of a third daughter, whose father was not Langston. Out of privacy concerns, the children’s names and ages have not been made public.
Investigators believe Langston arrived at the apartment while Dixon and the children were home. What happened next ended in tragedy.
