Lucy Letby being monitored on ‘hourly basis’ behind bars over fears of suicide after backlash over Netflix film

Letby was convicted of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others, but protesters have continued to maintain her innocence.Lucy Letby is on suicide watch in prison and is being monitored closely by guards after being mocked by inmates following the release of the Netflix documentary looking at her case.Guards at HMP Bronzefield, Surrey, have been told to check on her every hour over fears she could commit suicide or be attacked inside.

Inmates are said to be mocking the convicted child killer over the new film, including its opening scene which shows her being arrested and led away from her parents’ house by police.

A source told The Sun: “They are keeping a really close eye on Letby because of the Netflix show. That means she is being checked on an hourly basis, or even more.HM senior coroner for Cheshire Jacqueline Devonish will formally open inquests on Wednesday into the deaths of Baby C, Baby E, Baby I, Baby O and Baby P.

The infants died at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016 when Letby was employed as a nurse in the neo-natal unit.

In each of the five cases, the coroner is expected to open, adjourn and then suspend the hearings at Cheshire coroner’s court in Warrington until later this year.

Provisional dates for full inquests – if it reaches that stage – have been set for between September 14 and 25, pending the outcome of the Thirlwall public inquiry.Lady Justice Thirlwall’s inquiry report into how the nurse was able to commit her crimes is due to be published after Easter.

The feature-length documentary, hosted on Netflix, claims to feature further unreleased footage of Letby during her arrests and police questioning

The parents of convicted murderer Lucy Letby have criticised a Netflix documentary as a “complete invasion of privacy” over inclusion of footage showing her being arrested in her pyjamas.

The 36-year-old nurse was at the home of her parents in Hereford in June 2019 at the time of the arrest.

Letby’s parents, John and Susan Letby, said they will not watch the documentary, saying: “It would likely kill us if we did.”

Body camera footage from police – included in the Netflix trailer – shows officers arriving at the family home in search of Letby, where she is located wearing her pyjamas in her bedroom.

Letby is seen sitting up in bed, looking confused, before police explain they are arresting her on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. She is then led away in her dressing gown.

Ms Devonish has granted interested party status to Letby, who is represented by her barrister, Mark McDonald.

Letby, 36, from Hereford, is serving 15 whole-life orders at HMP Bronzefield after she was convicted of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others, with two attempts on one of her victims, between June 2015 and June 2016.

An inquest into the death of Baby A was held in October 2016 in which a narrative conclusion was recorded which stated it could not be determined what caused the youngster’s collapse and subsequent death or whether it was due to a natural or unnatural event.

Letby was removed from clinical duties in July 2016 after consultant paediatricians raised concerns that she may be deliberately harming babies, but those fears were not mentioned at Baby A’s inquest.Cheshire Constabulary was not called in by hospital bosses until May 2017 to investigate an increase in baby deaths.

The family of Baby A do not want the inquest reopened.

An inquest into the death of Baby D was opened in January 2016 but the coronial investigation was later suspended as criminal proceedings got under way.

Last month, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced it would not bring further charges against Letby.

Cheshire Constabulary had submitted files of evidence to consider alleged offences of murder and attempted murder related to two infants who died and seven who survived.

However, CPS chiefs concluded the evidential test was not met in any of the cases.

Letby was twice denied permission to appeal against her convictions in 2024.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), which investigates potential miscarriages of justice, is considering evidence presented on her behalf from an international panel of medics who claim poor medical care and natural causes were the reasons for the babies collapsing.

The newly released documentary shows Letby in bed as officers arrive to arrest her. Before going with the officers, Letby asks to see her cat, which she then hugs and kisses. The 36-year-old, from Hereford, is serving 15 whole-life orders after she was convicted of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others, with two attempts on one of her victims, between June 2015 and June 2016.The source added: “All the inmates are talking about the Netflix show and mocking Letby about it. Some have teased her about the opening scene, which shows her arrest.

Inmates cannot watch Netflix behind bars, but are in phone contact with people outside.

It comes after Former Detective Superintendent, Stuart Clifton, expressed his belief that the former neonatal nurse was innocent, a view supported by several high-profile figures since Letby’s conviction in 2024.Mr Clifton has been reviewing the evidence against Letby, who is set to die in prison after she was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill seven others at Countess of Chester Hospital.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting told LBC News on Wednesday that her fate should be a matter for the justice system and not campaigners.

Mr Streeting said: “Unless and until there is a judicial process that says that the court has got it wrong, I have to continue to have confidence in the court’s judgments, and I’m certainly not going to provide a running commentary.

“I can see there’s an active campaign on this, and there is a judicial process. If people think the courts have got it wrong, they can bring forward their evidence. They can test it and challenge it in the usual way.”

Supporters of Lucy Letby stage a protest outside Parliament.he Criminal Cases Review Commission is considering evidence from a panel of doctors claiming natural causes and poor care caused the deaths.

Letby has been twice denied permission to appeal against her convictions in 2024. The Investigation of Lucy Letby was released globally on Netflix on Wednesday, February 4.
